| Sleepwalking is a powerful human drama about an 11 year old girl struggling to come to terms with her mother's abandonment of her and the friendship she develops with her uncle as they attempt to recover the childhoods they have both been denied.
James Reedy (Stahl) lives quietly in a rainy truck-stop town in Northern California. His world is turned upside down when his sister Joleen (Theron) and her 11 year old daughter Tara (Robb) come to stay. When Joleen disappears without explanation James has to look after Tara, something he is ill-equipped to do and she doesn't want. But through patience and kindness James slowly wins Tara's trust.
But social services have other ideas and take Tara into care. Feeling guilty James rescues Tara and they set out on a search for Joleen and the truth. The bond between them grows strong as they live out their dreams, deny reality and adopt new personas. With the police hot on their heels James turns toward the only other place he knows, his fathers (Hopper) ranch in Utah. It is here that the long buried events of James troubled upbringing resurface. In an emotional conclusion, Tara has to choose between returning to the real world with Joleen or continuing her fantastical adventure with James.
